EFFECTIVENESS IN EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING PROGRAM
Last Updated on Monday, 28 August 2017 11:26 Written by Phạm Thu Hường Wednesday, 10 August 2016 14:10
The Ho Chi Minh University of Sciences has successfully applied a new pedagogic model: Experiential Learning for students from Bachelor of Science in Management with a major in International Business collaborated between HCMUS-VNU, Vietnam and Keuka College, USA. From 2011 up till now, this model has had 203 graduated students, 30 business projects and contributed almost 200 millions dong for social activities.
Every class is a company:
Frankly different from other traditional teaching methods, Experiential Learning is a heuristic approach through pragmatic projects. Specifically, knowledge from IT, business, telecommunication, public relationship, human resources, finance will be delivered in a visual and realistic manner through “every class is a company” teaching model.
A discussion in our model class
With that saying, students do not only hold firmly their lectures in classes but also they can figure out a way to apply that knowledge into their projects: planning and delivering project or deploying products. Moreover, this model also inspires students to have a passion in learning and studying, because they can see the value right in front of their eyes. This shall be used as a motivation for themselves.
Professor Paul McAfee (Keuka College, USA) said: “How companies arrange weekly meeting to present their plan and resolve their problem is the best way students can apply what they’ve learnt into reality”. Furthermore, international students from both IT and Business programs have the opportunity of working together on startup projects.
To the worthy results
By experiencing this kind of model, students shall build their own principles of skill set like: having presentation, team working and most importantly resolving problems.
When we witnessed the students stayed up late together just to catch up with deadline or team leaders urgently put up a meeting with their teammates when the competition between each group was too harsh, we can see the business flame burning inside.
A memorable moment in a charity trip after the successful event.
Phuong Uyen, student from the international program said: “What we’ve learnt here is not only come out from textbooks, we’ve learnt from these projects and pragmatic field trips. I believe that this shall be our concrete foundations before taking off to the next flight in our careers”.

According to IEEP (ITEC Excellent English Program), HCMUS, since the beginning of 2016, the amount of ITEC students passing IELTS band 6.0 has increased up to 39 students, that’s double in comparison with the same period last year. It is worth to mention that 72% of these students are still in their sophomore year.
This result comes from the devoutness in creating the curriculum and teaching from IEEP faculty. In recent years, English programs at ITEC has put a lot of effort in enhancing and improving in both of the teaching content and facilities. Foreign teachers at IEEP also create a trust worthy interaction between students, this shall give students positive feedback from every learning week. Besides, the tutorial system is provided freely every week. The tutor shall help students revising their lectures, resolving problem during their learning period and shall be a concrete bridge between the English teacher and students.
However, it is inarguable that these rewarding results come from those who put tremendous effort and hardworking throughout their learning span.
The list below is the students who receive IELTS Certificates from at least Band 6.0
